my kung fu brothers - may I hear you say....

Do people not utter the names of moves before performing them anymore?

I ventured to the side a couple of times today to skip jumping. It was so quiet. No chi. Silent. Tired. Slow. I tried cheering the line up and a few people just smiled at me. I yelled out names of moves to set example and our standard "more chi" from the top of my lung - all I heard back was cricket.

What happened?

I remember when I first started the back was as loud as the front - even more sometimes. It was fun to be in the back. And I trained hard.

Did we not set good example as older students? Did we not make the class fun for newer students?

Should I even worry about this?

  1. it concerns me too. i think i may have deafened some folks today when i was yelling more chi to rouse the masses but it is as much for me as the others. i find that there isn't much emphasis anymore with the newbies in saying the name of the movements. we can only lead by example so let's keep at it. honestly when you & qbertplaya are not around, the sound chi level is lower. even the encouraging clapping has lessened. so let's make it a point to keep doing this & maybe the newbies will pick it up & even some of our other brothers in line. MORE CHI! TRAIN HARDER!

  3. oh EZ. That's chi. I know a lot of saying the name is fear, because, for me at least, I had a hard time pronouncing them. Luckily, I had people like Zhou teach me who not only taught moves but how to say them and say them with chi. I think maybe part of it now is that different people are teaching and don't spend as much time teaching how to pronounce the move. Sad I missed last night :( but I'd feel bad if I got everyone sick right before the weekend.

  4. that is definitely a point, hannah. but i think we all butchered the names at the beginning. frankly people say them differently but as sifu said we should at least try. of course some may find it annoying, or me annoying, but it's all part of the fun. some people don't even say amituofo! that's basic. i still think there are some simple things that have gone to slack & a shaping up is in order & to that: smiles everyone!

  5. No I agree. I still butcher the names most of the time, but try to say them with chi. But the back (or side) does seem different in many ways from when I was back there. I think you're right that the best thing we can do is be as good examples as possible...Maybe we can take turns getting sent to the back to infiltrate and help light a fire back there.......

  8. Even if we might not say the names correctly, it's the action meditation that counts!! More Qi!!

  9. Amitoufo! Announcing the name before executing is part of the movement and is incomplete otherwise. In addition, Sifu has a cow if you don't answer when someone prompts "more Chi" and the answer is weak. Keep the spirit rolling! Amitoufo! Jian.
